Diesel and gasoline—or petrol—engine oils can share the same SAE viscosity, base-oil type and even some performance claims, but they are not automatically interchangeable. Yes, but the difference is mainly in performance requirements and additive formulation—not simply whether one oil is synthetic or thicker. Why Diesel Engines Can Need Different Oil Performance
Soot loading
Combustion particles can enter the crankcase through blow-by. Diesel oil may need to keep soot dispersed so particles do not agglomerate, thicken the oil excessively or contribute to wear.
High cylinder pressure
Many diesel engines operate with high compression and substantial bearing loads. The specified oil must maintain a protective film under those conditions.

What Low-SAPS Oil Means for Diesel and Gasoline Engines
SAPS refers to sulfated ash, phosphorus and sulfur. These are connected to additive chemistry that can protect the engine, but excessive levels for a particular emissions system may shorten the life of catalysts or particulate filters.
Sulfated ash
Ash can remain after oil additives burn. In a DPF or GPF, this non-combustible residue accumulates over time and cannot be removed through ordinary regeneration.
