Diesel and gasoline—or petrol—engine oils can share the same SAE viscosity, base-oil type and even some performance claims, but they are not automatically interchangeable. Are Diesel and Gasoline Engine Oils Different?

Yes, but the difference is mainly in performance requirements and additive formulation—not simply whether one oil is synthetic or thicker. Diesel oils may be engineered to manage soot-related viscosity increase, high piston temperatures, oxidation, turbocharger deposits and long heavy-duty service. Gasoline oils may place particular emphasis on low-speed pre-ignition protection, timing-chain wear, fuel economy, turbocharger deposits and gasoline-engine emission systems.

Modern passenger-car diesel oils can also be very different from traditional heavy-duty truck oils. A diesel car with a diesel particulate filter may require a low- or mid-SAPS ACEA C-category oil and a specific automaker approval. A heavy-duty diesel truck may instead require API CK-4, FA-4 or an ACEA heavy-duty category.

Passenger-Car Diesel Oil Is Not Always Heavy-Duty Truck Oil

A modern diesel car or SUV may use a small turbocharged engine with common-rail injection, a diesel particulate filter, exhaust gas recirculation and an oxidation catalyst. Its oil specification may be closer to a modern European gasoline-engine oil than to a traditional 15W-40 fleet oil.

What Low-SAPS Oil Means for Diesel and Gasoline Engines
