Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is a water-based emissions fluid that goes into a dedicated DEF tank and is injected into the exhaust after the engine. Engine oil is a petroleum-based or synthetic lubricant that goes into the engine crankcase and circulates through bearings, pistons, camshafts and the turbocharger.
DEF is not diesel fuel, an oil additive, coolant or engine cleaner. Engine oil must never be poured into the DEF tank, and DEF must never be poured into the engine-oil opening. A wrong fill can become much more expensive once the engine is started.
