A deep or persistent engine knock can indicate severe lubrication or mechanical damage. Switch off immediately for a red oil-pressure warning, rapid oil loss, heavy smoke, a dry dipstick or worsening metallic knock. Never work beneath a vehicle supported only by a jack.
