How to Find the Correct Oil, Capacity, Filter and Torque

Confirm the year, make and model. Use the registration document or VIN label rather than relying on the approximate year the vehicle was purchased.
Identify the exact engine. Check the owner’s manual, under-hood emissions label, VIN-based manufacturer portal or reliable service information.
Open the official capacity and specification page. Look for “engine oil,” “capacities,” “maintenance data,” “lubrication system” or “recommended fluids.”
Use the with-filter refill figure. A routine oil change with a replacement filter normally uses the listed drain-and-refill or service-fill quantity—not the larger dry-engine capacity.
Confirm the complete oil standard. The front label may show viscosity, while the back label or API symbol shows performance approvals.

How to Change Engine Oil Step by Step

Park and secure the vehicle. Use a solid level surface. Apply the parking brake, select Park or the appropriate gear and chock the wheels as required.
Open the hood and identify the oil filler cap. Confirm that the cap can be removed before draining. This prevents discovering a seized or inaccessible filler cap after the engine is empty.

Can You Change Oil Without Ramps or a Jack?
