A dual-rated engine oil can legitimately protect both gasoline and diesel engines when its viscosity, gasoline category, diesel category and manufacturer approvals match the engines involved.

For example, an oil displaying a diesel category such as API CK-4 and a gasoline category may be suitable for certain mixed-fleet applications. That does not make it suitable for every modern passenger car or every diesel engine.

Do not interchange based on viscosity alone

A gasoline 5W-30 and diesel 5W-30 can use very different additive systems and carry different after-treatment, fuel-economy and engine-manufacturer approvals.

API “S” categories apply to gasoline-powered passenger cars and light vehicles. API SQ became licensable in March 2025 and succeeds API SP for new products.

C

API diesel C categories

Categories such as CK-4 cover many high-speed four-stroke diesel engines and include protection against oxidation, wear, soot-related thickening and after-treatment problems.

F

API diesel F categories

FA-4 identifies certain lower-HTHS XW-30 diesel oils for select newer engines. It is not interchangeable with CK-4 or earlier C categories.

ACEA

European categories

ACEA A/B and C light-duty oils may cover gasoline and diesel applications, while heavy-duty sequences use separate E and newer F-category requirements.

Can You Use Gasoline Engine Oil in a Diesel Engine?

A gasoline-marketed oil may be suitable for a diesel only when it displays the diesel category or European diesel approval required by that exact engine.

Some light-duty European oils serve both gasoline and diesel engines, especially products carrying ACEA A/B or catalyst-compatible C categories plus manufacturer approvals.

Gasoline-only oil is normally the wrong choice

That makes it a genuine dual-application product within those ratings. However, API SN is an older gasoline category, so the oil should not be assumed suitable for a newer gasoline vehicle requiring API SQ, ILSAC GF-7 or a current OEM approval.

Start with the SAE viscosity. Confirm that 0W-20, 5W-30, 5W-40, 15W-40 or the printed grade is approved for the exact engine.
Find the API Donut. The upper portion shows the API service category. Look for the gasoline S category, diesel C/F category or both.
Look for the API certification mark. The Starburst or Shield is associated with current ILSAC passenger-car gasoline requirements. It is not a general diesel certification.

Some older heavy-duty diesel oils became popular with classic-car owners because of their anti-wear chemistry. However, modern diesel formulations have changed, and zinc or phosphorus content alone does not establish suitability.

A flat-tappet camshaft, rebuilt engine or racing engine may require a specific break-in or high-zinc formulation recommended by the engine builder.

Modern street cars need a balanced formula
