API gasoline categories
API “S” categories apply to gasoline-powered passenger cars and light vehicles. API SQ became licensable in March 2025 and succeeds API SP for new products.
API diesel C categories

API diesel F categories

What Is a Dual-Rated Engine Oil?
A dual-rated oil carries performance claims for gasoline and diesel engines. The bottle may display more than one API service category or a European approval covering both fuel types.
Find the required S category
Confirm API SQ, SP or the category required by the gasoline engine. Check ILSAC GF-7A/GF-7B when the manual requires a current fuel-economy passenger-car oil.
Find the required C, F or ACEA category
Confirm CK-4, FA-4, ACEA C3, E11 or whichever diesel category and manufacturer approval the engine specifies.
Match both engines completely
A product can be technically dual-rated while still failing one vehicle’s viscosity, fuel-economy, low-SAPS or OEM-approval requirement.

Diesel particulate filter
A DPF traps soot and later burns much of it during regeneration. Metallic ash from engine-oil additives does not burn away in the same manner and can accumulate over time.
Use the low- or mid-SAPS oil and manufacturer approval specified for the diesel.
Gasoline particulate filter
Modern direct-injection gasoline engines may use a GPF. Current gasoline specifications include limits intended to support emissions-system durability.
An unapproved heavy-duty diesel oil may not satisfy the gasoline engine’s ash, fuel-economy or deposit requirements.
Catalytic converter

Timing-chain wear
Current passenger-car oil standards include timing-chain wear performance. An older gasoline rating printed on dual-rated diesel oil may not provide the latest category level.

Is Diesel Oil Better for Older Gasoline Engines Because It Has More Zinc?

Some older heavy-duty diesel oils became popular with classic-car owners because of their anti-wear chemistry. However, modern diesel formulations have changed, and zinc or phosphorus content alone does not establish suitability.
