Engine performance category

API gasoline categories use the letter S, with examples including SN, SP and the newer SQ category.

API diesel categories use different C and F designations and must not be selected using gasoline rules.

ILSAC

ACEA publishes European Oil Sequences that define minimum performance levels for different engine and emissions-system applications.

ACEA categories are broader industry performance claims. European vehicle makers may then require a more specific approval based on additional tests, limits or service needs.

Practical consequence: “ACEA C3” on a bottle is useful, but it does not automatically prove that the oil carries every BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Porsche or other manufacturer approval associated with some C3 applications.

What Do ACEA A/B, C, E and F Categories Mean?

A/B categories cover gasoline and light-duty diesel applications that do not require the same after-treatment-focused chemistry as the C family.

Examples found in current or legacy manuals include A3/B4, A5/B5 and A7/B7.

ACEA C
