ILSAC GF-6 is a performance standard for passenger-car gasoline engine oil—not a viscosity, brand or type of synthetic oil. What Is ILSAC GF-6 Oil?

GF-6 is not the same as 0W-20
0W-20 is an SAE viscosity grade. GF-6 is a performance specification. A bottle may show both, such as “SAE 0W-20, ILSAC GF-6A.”
GF-6 does not mean full synthetic
The front label may separately identify full synthetic, synthetic blend or conventional oil. GF-6 describes the finished oil’s tested performance.
GF-6 is not correct for every engine
European cars, diesels, motorcycles and specialist engines may require ACEA, JASO or exact manufacturer approvals in addition to—or instead of—ILSAC.

What Does ILSAC GF-6 Protect Against?
GF-6 introduced oil-performance testing intended to reduce LSPI risk in susceptible gasoline engines, particularly modern turbocharged direct-injection designs.
The standard added protection requirements for timing chains, which can suffer wear from soot, contaminants and unsuitable oil performance.
GF-6 strengthened high-temperature deposit protection for pistons and turbochargers operating under demanding heat.
The oil must demonstrate control of deposits that can restrict oil flow, contaminate components and reduce engine cleanliness.

Can GF-6 Replace GF-5 Oil?
GF-6A can generally replace GF-5 when the viscosity grade is correct. GF-6A was designed as the successor to GF-5 and includes the performance properties of the earlier category.
GF-6B is different. Because GF-6B applies only to SAE 0W-16, it should not replace GF-5 oil in a vehicle that requires 0W-20, 5W-20, 5W-30 or another grade.

A sealed, genuine GF-6 product does not suddenly become physically unusable because GF-7 is newer. Use it when it matches the manual, viscosity, storage conditions and service requirements.

Which Cars Need ILSAC GF-6 Oil?
