Quick verdict

What to Do If You Used the Wrong Oil Grade

The correct response depends on how much was added, how different the grade is and whether the alternative is approved for the engine.

A small top-up was added

  • Confirm how much was added.
  • Check whether the added grade is permitted by the manual.
  • Make sure the final level is not above the maximum mark.
  • Monitor for warning lights, noise, leakage or abnormal pressure.

The entire engine was filled with the wrong grade
